1. Introduction
This document describes the architecture of the Federated Cancer Image Infrastructure of EUCAIM. It has been developed through the discussions of the participants in the tasks related to the technical developments and defines the components, interactions, user stories and main functionality of the EUCAIM platform. The architecture will evolve along the implementation of the project, but this document aims at defining the long-term vision. More detailed documents will be developed addressing the individual components and the APIs, implementation phases and functionality of the components listed.
The document uses the definitions agreed in the Glossary of the project[1]. The user roles and user profiles considered are:
Data Requester: A user that wants to explore the public catalogue and eventually request access to data and process them using the tools available in the platform. A data requester can be a Data Scientist (who will develop tools, models or complex data analysis) or a Clinical Researcher (who will use the high-level tools), each one requiring a different user interface.
Data Provider: Any natural or legal person, which is an entity or a body in the health or care sector, or performing research in relation to these sectors, as well as European Union institutions, bodies, offices and agencies who has the right or obligation, or the ability to make available, including to register, provide, restrict access or exchange certain data.
Tool Provider: A developer that would like to contribute with a processing tool to the EUCAIM’s marketplace.
Governing Body: A board of EUCAIM that can decide the approval, comment or refusal of an application of data access, data or tool provisioning, supported by legal, ethical and technical boards.
Data Manager: A duly authorised technical expert (or team of experts) on a provider’s site that will install, configure, operate and maintain the local services that support the federation or who will be in charge of uploading the data in the central storage.
Platform Manager: A technical expert or team of experts that will operate the core services of the EUCAIM platform.
It is important to take into account that interactions with the services of the platform must follow a set of Rules for Participation and will need the approval of the governance boards of EUCAIM.
